Welcome to Art by Mar

Mariah Garcia (Mexican-American b. 2000) is a self-taught artist, with the focus on oil painting. Based in the Central Valley, CA, my pieces are motivated by emotions through my life, creating pieces that allow others to also connect and communicate through the work’s story-telling that can only be told through imagery. I started off creating art as a young child and began to become inspired by various artists throughout time studying at University of Fresno State, Ca. and personal research. 

Taking personal experiences, the work represents universal, yet, personal encounters that a woman, minority, and specifically, a Mexican-American can live through. I use my skill to open the eyes of my surrounding audience to the global issues that continue to advance to generations beyond, allowing the artwork to be a reflection of my activism or social consciousness.

Guiding a path for my emotions to become understood, my work challenges gender, femininity, societal expectations, traditions, etc. through story-telling with the juxtaposition of realism and expressionism technique. Finding myself creating mostly portraits, assisting in the process of understanding my own emotions and experiences, this allows myself to reflect and understand the outcome of those life experiences. Growing up, I have lived through many situations that became internalized; therefore, needing an outlet to express these emotions behind being a woman in today's society. When creating my works, I find it best to work on a canvas, using oil paint to execute my style and ideas.
This paves way for an image to be captured that does not exist, allowing it to come to life so realistically, being seen and felt by the viewer, pushing me to advocate suppressed imagery, permitting society to engage with a physical image.
